No record goes to insurance company or elsewhere in the clinic. The doctor sends the patient to the lab. The lab draws the blood and sends it to Oregon Medical Laboratories in Eugene. Results are back in three days. Results are kept by number (not name) in a locked file cabinet. Results are given to the physician, who informs the patient in person. If the patient tests positive and the patient has given blood since 1977, the physician gives a name, social security number, and birthday to the Red Cross so that any blood recipient can be notified.
